AWWA Water 101, Security Planning, and Partnership for Safe Water Online Courses

Water 101: Water 101 introduces students to the principles of water treatment and distribution as well as plant operations and management. This course also provides awareness-level information on drinking water regulations and security. The development of Water 101 was made possible by a grant from the USEPA.

Security Planning Series: AWWA, in conjunction with the US Environmental Protection Agency, has developed a three-course series to address procedures for securing your drinking water facility. This series consists of the following courses: Security Planning for Drinking Water Systems: An Operational Approach, Emergency Response Planning, and Security Hardware.

Partnership for Safe Water Series: AWWA and the Partnership for Safe Water have developed the online course Optimizing Performance Using Turbidity Data.

Keep in mind you can register for three separate systems on the AWWA site. These systems are:

  • The Member Zone that is accessed by clicking Member Login in the upper right corner of each AWWA website page.
  • The AWWA Online Institute that houses all of AWWA's online courses EXCEPT Water 101, Security Planning for Drinking Water Systems: An Operational Approach, Emergency Response Planning, Security Hardware, and Optimizing Performance Using Turbidity Data.
  • The AWWA learning management system that houses the Water 101, Security Planning for Drinking Water Systems: An Operational Approach, Emergency Response Planning, Security Hardware, and Optimizing Performance Using Turbidity Data courses.
If you register for each system with different user names and passwords, you must use the appropriate user name and password to re-enter each system. Please keep a record of your login information. Each system also has a separate support desk. Contact information follows:

Funded by a grant from the USEPA, Water 101 is available free of charge to individuals employed by a tribal utility in the United States. Water 101 is available on a fee basis to all others.

The Security Hardware course is available free of charge to the first 1000 students who sign up to take the course. Funding is provided by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The Security Planning for Drinking Water Systems course is available to members for $64.00 and to non-members for $96.00. (Note that a one-module demonstration is available free of charge.) Students who successfully complete the fee version of the course will receive 0.2 CEU's. This course is designed to introduce water professionals to appropriate security measures in the water industry. The course focuses on vulnerability assessments.

The EPA provided grant funding for the Emergency Response Planning course to the first 1,000 students. AWWA is now offering this course for a discounted rate of $12.00. CEU’s are not yet available for this course. Emergency Response Planning is designed to help water professionals review the fundamentals of emergency response, create or update an emergency response plan for their system, and certify their completed plans with the EPA.

The Partnership for Safe Water Course, Optimizing Performance Using Turbidity Data, can be purchased by non-members for $144.00, by AWWA members for $96.00, and by Partnership members for $25.00. If you do not receive automatic member pricing when you attempt to purchase this course, do not complete your transaction. Email online@awwa.org with your membership number(s). We will update your records, and you will then be able to purchase this course with the appropriate discount.

Optimizing Performance using Turbidity Data has been approved in the following states: Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Ontario, Oregon (.1 DW CEU), Pennsylvania (3 hrs), Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Unless specified by state above, students will receive .3 CEUs for successfully completing the course.

Approval is pending in these states: Georgia, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, and Vermont.

For courses that offer continuing education credit, AWWA requires students to go through each module before taking the final exam. AWWA reserves the right to withhold credits if a student enters a course, skips any modules, and goes directly to the final exam.
